Curved Birch Stool

The bar stool 64 was created by the designer and architect Alvar Aalto in 1933 for the Teatro Corso in Zurich. This object is now a classic and known worldwide for its timeless appearance and for its high recognition value.

The barstool 64 is a higher version of the stool 60 and also features Aalto’s typical organic L-shape. The bar stool is made of curved, lacquered birch wood.On request the stool’s seat is available in laminate or linoleum, as well as upholstered with fabric or leather.

At the time, and still today, the innovative bending technique used for this purpose made an impression. To make the stool, a straight piece of solid birch wood is cut in the direction of the grain in order to form a kind of fan. Small, thinly planed wood leaves are then glued to the wood to make the bending and shaping possible using steam and heat. The metal ring that holds the four stool legs together was developed by Aino Aalto, Alvar’s wife, and has now been replaced by a matching birchwood ring.
The bar stool 64 has a height of 65 cm or 70 cm and is therefore ideal for the high table in the kitchen or the home bar.
